In the spring, a Milanese newspaper, Corriere della Sera, published an article about Elsa Peretti, the Italian heiress whose jewelry designs accounted for 15 percent of Tiffany & Company’s sales last year.
The paper reported that it, along with the tax authorities in the United States and Italy, had received anonymous dossiers accusing Ms. Peretti of tax evasion.
